What is NDIS Capacity Building? Detailed Guide

What is NDIS Capacity Building?

NDIS Capacity Building is a dedicated part of your NDIS plan focused on helping you develop long term independence and essential life skills. Unlike daily support services, it emphasizes learning and growth, equipping you with abilities like managing finances, securing employment, or building social confidence.

This type of funding falls under the National Disability Insurance Scheme and is designed to empower participants through structured support. Whether it’s improving daily living skills or accessing community programs, NDIS Capacity Building provides the tools to achieve personal goals.

Why is capacity building important?

Capacity Building goes beyond immediate assistance. It prepares you for a more independent future by strengthening critical skills. For example, learning to navigate public transport or manage a household reduces reliance on ongoing support.

It also fosters confidence, making it easier to participate in social, educational, or work opportunities.

Another key benefit is tailored support. Your NDIS Capacity Building funds are aligned with your specific goals, ensuring you receive relevant training, therapy, or guidance. This personalized approach maximizes the impact of your NDIS plan.

NDIS funding types

NDIS plans allocate funding into three main categories, each serving distinct purposes.

Core Supports

Core Supports cover everyday needs like transportation, personal care, and household assistance. These funds are flexible, meaning you can adjust allocations based on changing priorities.

Capacity Building Supports

Capacity Building Supports target skill development and long term growth. Examples include therapy, job training, or social participation programs. Unlike Core Supports, these funds are category specific and cannot be transferred between sub sections.

Capital Supports

Capital Supports cover one time expenses such as assistive technology or home modifications. These funds are approved for predefined needs and are not flexible.

What does capacity building funding pay for?

There are 9 distinct capacity building support categories under the NDIS. Each category represents specific areas where you can use your allocated funds to develop skills and independence.

A key rule to remember: you can only spend funds within their assigned category. For example, if your plan includes funding for Improved Relationships, you cannot use those funds for Finding and Keeping a Job supports instead.

The amount you receive in each category depends entirely on the goals outlined in your NDIS plan. Your funding will always align with the objectives you’ve set with your planner or LAC.

Types Capacity Building Supports

NDIS Capacity Building Supports are divided into nine categories, each targeting specific areas of skill development and independence. These supports are designed to align with your personal goals and provide structured pathways for growth.

1.     Support Coordination

This category includes funding for a support coordinator who helps you understand and manage your NDIS plan. They assist in connecting you with suitable providers and services, ensuring you make the most of your allocated funds.

2.     Improved Living Arrangements

Funding under this category supports activities related to finding and maintaining a suitable home. This may involve assistance with rental applications, tenancy agreements, or developing skills to live independently.

3.     Increased Social and Community Participation

Formerly known as CB Social Community and Civic Participation, this support focuses on helping you engage in social, recreational, or educational activities. It may cover fees for classes, memberships, or programs that build confidence and social skills.

4.     Finding and Keeping a Job

This support provides resources for employment readiness, such as resume writing, interview preparation, and workplace skill development. It aims to help you secure and sustain meaningful employment.

5.     Improved Relationships

Funding here supports behavioral therapy, social skills training, and strategies to foster positive interactions with others. It is particularly beneficial for those looking to strengthen personal or professional relationships.

6.     Improved Health and Wellbeing

7.     Improved Learning

Supports under CB Lifelong Learning assist with educational goals, such as transitioning from school to higher education. This may include tutoring, study skill development, or assistance with university applications.

8.     Improved Life Choices

This funding allows for plan management services, giving you greater control over your NDIS budget without handling financial administration yourself. It is ideal for those who want flexibility without the burden of self-management.

9.     Improved Daily Living

Also called CBDailyActivity, this support covers therapies and training to enhance day-to-day independence. Examples include occupational therapy, speech therapy, or mobility training.

Managing your NDIS funding

Effectively utilizing your NDIS Capacity Building funding requires careful planning. Here are key steps to ensure optimal use of your resources:

Review Your Plan Regularly
Check your NDIS plan to confirm which capacity building supports are included and how funds are allocated across categories.

Work with a Support Coordinator

Track Expenditures
